In 1999, Chad Pytel started Guerilla Improv, with 10 original performing members. That group became an official WPI Organization, WPI Improv Comedy, in 2000. In 2001, members of GI and other friends started KILROY, a sketch comedy group. At the time, the group operated under Masque, WPI's student theatre organization, with sponsorship from WPI Improv Comedy. Mainly for financial reasons, in 2002, WPI Improv Comedy decided to change its name to WPI Student Comedy Productions, and began to officially sponsor both Guerilla Improv and KILROY. In early 2004, KILROY member Ben Sandofsky opened up auditions for the group that has come to be known as Empty Set, which is also sponsored by Student Comedy Productions.
